House DJs
Trevor Walker

Credited as the primary catalyst and pioneer of the soul jazz and house movement in Ottawa, Trevor has been involved in the industry for the last 15 years. Walker brings a surrealness to his sets that take listeners on a journey. Jazz remains the binding influence behind the music he plays, giving him the flexibility to incorporate and investigate different sounds in his sets.

A stalwart on the radio waves, Trevor continues his long running radio shows at both Ottawa and Carelton Universities. His extensive collection runs the gamut of the musical spectrum, connecting bossa to break beat and beyond. Walker's ability to get a dance floor moving is in no doubt attributed to the fact that as a break dancer in the early part of his career - he knows what makes people move.

See Trevor on Thursdays and Saturdays at Mercury Lounge and at Restaurant 18 on Fridays.

Lance Baptiste

Another pioneer of the deep jazz movement, Lance has spent much of his 15 plus years in the biz cultivating the masses via radio and his live DJ sets. A credible radio personality, and host of his own radio show, Baptiste has an extensive knowledge of music. His knowledge of the subject is clearly evident during his DJ sets as he moves fast between soul, funk, House and of course jazz.

Lance continues his residency at the Mercury Lounge, a residency he has maintained since the inception of the club. More than a club DJ, Lance has been a spokesman for this burgeoning scene, and an ardent promoter of the music.

See Lance on Fridays and at Restaurant Social on Saturdays.

Percussionist

Dr. Lee

Joining Trevor Walker every second Saturday, Lee Garbutt (aka DR. LEE) is a percussion-based musician and teacher. Inspired by West African rhythms fused with modern electronic beats and sounds in the everyday world, Lee creates music for dance, art installations and other music projects. His credits include performing for Cirque du Soleil and collaborating with The Souljazz Orchestra, Antizario, and the Peter Hum Jazz Ensemble. He is also the curator of the WESTFEST TAM TAM since 2006. One of Dr. Lee's songs was also featured On CBC Television's The Greatest Canadian Invention. In 2003, he released his first CD, Orange Galaxy. He travelled to Guinea Conakry, West Africa to study with djembe master Aboubacar Fatouabou Camara in 2004. Lee is currently performing, teaching djembe classes and working on releasing a new album in 2011.

See Dr. Lee every second Saturday.

SkaT

A product of the 90s punk/ska scene and inspired by the lack of musical depth by people that spun 60s 'oldies' in town. SkaT started Brixton's monthly Ska/Soul/Rock&Roll Soundsystem with local northern soul/mod/jazz guru DJ Whitey. The mission statement was keeping the playlist dynamic and the dance floor movin' through heartfelt musical exploration.

After 5 years SkaT now runs the MELTIN' POT at the Atomic Rooster, one Saturday a month with Mark Nolan & Stephane The Man.

With Rocksteady Soul Thursday's at Mercury Underground, the focus is on 60s and 70s era Jamaican Ska, Rocksteady and Early Reggae complimented by Rhythm & Blues, Northern Soul and Funk, bringing in a roster of guest selectors weekly who really know their 'grooves'. Heavy on the dusty vinyl!
